10 Top Towing Tips
Please use these tips when towing.
1. Always ensure your car, trailer and their tyres are in good
condition for the journey ahead.
2. Never exceed the weight limits for your car or trailer, even if it
is tempting, sometimes.
3. Always secure your load, well. Do a final check around the
whole unit just before you move off.
4. Also before moving off, check that your trailer lights are
working properly.
5. When connecting up the trailer, check that the nose weight
is correctly balanced. Look at your unit from a distance to
see if it looks balanced and safe to use.
6. If you have a wide load, check you can see behind. Use
towing mirrors for caravans etc.
7. If you need it, practise reversing with the trailer. This
technique is a good one to master!
8. On long descenting roads, use your engine as a brake
by changing down a gear. This keeps your unit under
control, without constantly using the brakes.
9. If you have a 4 x 4 then use low ratio for hill starts and
difficult ground.
10. Finally, always plan well ahead when on the road and
signal correctly to let other road users know what you
are going to do.
